Studio of Decentralized Architecture (SODA) invites nonprofits, cultural organizations, and mission-driven partners in Houston and Austin to apply for our 2026 Open Call, offering up to $15,000 in pro-bono design support.

SODA is a nonprofit, interdisciplinary design studio and collaborative platform expanding access to architecture for historically underserved communities. We bring together architects, designers, artists, and community practitioners to help organizations imagine spaces that strengthen identity, dignity, and the public realm.

About the Open Call

Each year, SODA partners with one organization to explore a design challenge with social impact. We focus on early-stage design—research, visioning, and conceptual strategies that help clarify needs, build momentum, and support future fundraising or planning efforts.

SODA does not replace architectural services or act as Architect of Record. We provide the foundational thinking that prepares organizations for next steps.

What Selected Partners Receive

A customized design package may include*

• Site or Building Potential Analysis

• Preliminary Space Planning and Program Development

• Conceptual Architectural or Interior Design Studies

• Visioning Frameworks and Narrative Storyboards

• Illustrative Renderings or Visualizations

• Feasibility Sketches and Spatial Scenarios

• A Next-Steps Roadmap for Continued Development

*Deliverables are tailored to the project’s mission, scale, and community needs.

Eligibility

Applicants must be:

• A registered 501(c)(3) or community-based organization

• Located in the Houston or Austin Metropolitan Area

• Pursuing cultural, educational, civic, environmental, or community-serving work

SODA cannot support:

• Private commercial ventures

• Individual residential projects

• Work involving hazardous materials

Process

SODA leads a collaborative, community-centered design process. We do not produce construction or permit documents. Our work supports visioning, decision-making, and advocacy—laying the foundation for future architectural engagement.
